    13 September 2018

    text Violeta Ivanova

Her characters are often made out of geometric shapes but with Slavena languages win the eternal battle against mathematics. Not just because she graduated from the German Language High School or because she also speaks English and (a little) Spanish, but because she decided to study Visual Arts in Maastricht. In Dutch. Which back then she didn't speak.

"It all started when we moved to Tel Aviv and were looking for an apartment. Maya suggested that I make a fun illustration asking for our friends' help to find a nice place (it's very hard in Tel Aviv)." That's how the big bang in the couple's life happened - the birth of the series One of Those Days which consists of illustrations of their everyday married life.

    text Violeta Ivanova

While she tells us how nobody ever pronounces her name correctly, we're embarrassed that at first we, too, were one of these guys. That's why we quickly shift the focus to her personality and she tells us how, as a kid, she had an imaginary friend with whom she communicated telepathically. And how she picked the pencil as early as 3-years-old, then studied art at school, then she enrolled in NBU to study Graphic Design and finally she got a job at Saatchi & Saatchi.

When she is a child, her sister, also an artist, leaves in front of her a bouquet of red tulips to paint, and she copies on the sheet what she sees. Instead of praise, however, she gets a lesson: what was created by the nature is perfect, so there is no need to repeat it. "My next painting was blue tulips with pink handles," she tells us today to capture the direction in her painting: both astonishing, but also with plots close to detail and sensation to dreams.
