• To Hear The heart of Mozart

    16 March 2017

text Emanuela Ivanova photo Dobrin Kashavelov

Everyone is talking about the asteroid that is named after him and is travelling around the sun 250 million kilometres from here. His path in the music universe, however, is way more interesting. The principal conductor of Heidelberg - with reserved stand in front of top orchestras from Berlin to Tokyo - is now raising his baton for Mystery of immortality, pointing deep in the heart of Mozart.
  • Stories From the Top of the Bow

    23 February 2017

    text Emanuela Ivanova

If you could conduct the emotions of millions with the bow of your violin, you could rule the world. But why would you, if the whole planet already feels like home? That's what's going through our heads after a conversation with Ara Malikian - the Lebanese virtuoso with a Spanish passport that is coming to Sofia on February 28.

Three years ago Evgeni Enchev and the rest of So Called Crew are taking this basement at Borovo (where they once met) and start to lay a concrete pad for their first studio. Making hip-hop together is almost the same:
one puts the base, other aligns it and third is piecing up until someone like us comes in and says " it looks great."

He starts our Skype conversation with "Sorry, I'm a bit sick, so my voice might be a bit hoarse". In the next 50 minutes he yawns a couple of times as well be we're not at all offended because we know where he must have been just a few hours ago - on the resident DJ post at the Parisian club Concrete which lays on the banks of the Seine river and almost never sleeps.

When we try to reach Her, two men answer the call - Simon and Victor, who dress up their love of women in music that easily takes off your clothes.

We're changing the fourth calendar on our wall since Ivo decided not to work as sedate economist and use the know-how from his past to create "site for music". His friends immediately give him a helping hand (the prairie fox from the logo, for example, is tamed by the illustrator Gergana Stancheva). Now we meet in the middle of the Skype bridge between Berlin Sofia to talk about the result: Stereofox is an online music platform "for people with open taste."

    17 November 2016

She's Yoana but everyone calls her Yoko from her first day on this Earth when her father gives her these four happy letters. Today they are bonus to the greatest luck in the world which she combines with hard work and all that results in two rap bands and the title "event manager at Mixtape 5".

Azam Ali travels constantly but not with a huge rucksack and a map of faraway places in her pocket. She was born in Iran, grew up in India and the USA and her songs contain Persian poetry, Turkish folklore, Indian motives and European mid-century music.

Talking to Saul Williams is a strange experience. A few minutes into the conversation and you've already realised that the raper-poet-hip-hop-activist is not only an erudite (for that you are prepared) but is also an expert on the English language with a vocabulary of the ultimate one million words.

Saul Williams is coming to Sofia on October 23. The concert starts at 20:00 at Mixtape 5's A-Side.

"I'm not really a talkative person", isn't the first thing you expect to hear from a poet, dramatist, music lover and radio host. One of the voices of Alarma and Artefir shows on the National radio is telling us exactly this, so we reduce the level of our own curiosity to hear his music better:
  • Things from life: Wax Tailor

    6 October 2016

    text Natalia Ivanova

We're starting with merci beaucoup to Hitchcock, Lubic and Spielberg for the good dialogues, which are enchanting him since he was a child, and continue with voilà in 2005, when they turn into the lyrics of his first album Tales of Forgotten Melodies. That way the  scene name of the French hip-hop producer Jean-Christophe Le Saoût finds its lining and holds the thread for all of his next projects: like Dusty Rainbow from the Dark at 2012, which is telling us a story about a boy (with special short movies, directed by different artists for each song) and Phonovisions Symphonis Version, which is puuting a whole Symphonic Orchestra on the stage in 2014. Today Wax Tailor is ready with his fifth album By Any Beats Necessary or the "soundtrack  to a better elsewhere", including rap legends as Ghostface Killah, and goes to a world tour, which is coming to Sofia on the 16th of March 2017 at Sofia Live Club.
  • Things from life: Kan Wakan

    15 September 2016

    text Natalia Ivanova

By ID: Georgi Linev, born in Sofia, with current adress in Los Angeles. By vocation: Kan Wakan, trip-hop master and the brain of the project, which is "so sweet, that it’s like a sugar rush pulsing through your system." We read the last sentence at Nylon, together with a bunch of sweet reviews about his new single Molasses. Today we're building a bridge through the ocean, because of some news with local adress - Kan Wakan is coming to Terminal 1 in Sofia, and his newcoming triple album Phantasmagoria is gathering sound even from the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. Meanwhile we're speaking with Georgi about the evenings infront of his home in Sofia, the feeling of standing infront of the audience in LA and the slow breakfast with banitza and boza, which is a moment "very hard to beat".

She feels that the last two years had passed as if they were hundred, because everything is happening on fast speed, that also change her with the same intensity. At the end of 2015 she, Iliana and the three boys in their team - Christo, Peter and Antony - formed their new indie folk rock band Dead Man's Hat, which is preparing their debut album. We're going to hear it for sure, but before that we're walking through the notes in her life, that bring her up when she's alone and make her cry among the huge crowd:

  • The thing from life: Chase&Status

    16 June 2016

    text Natalia Ivanova

We have a double click over here: the connection between Saul (Chase) and Will (Status) is so good, as it is between the bass and the lyrics, that meet in their music since More Than Alot in 2008. They don't leave our ears since then, but every time we decide to say "the dubstep/dnb duo from London", they change their direction. Now they turn to more grime and Prodigy sound, but in Sofia we'll also listen to some of the hyped tracks from No More Idols and Brand New Machine.
  • Road of changes

    9 June 2016

    Text Nikola Shahpazov

We became a bit sad when we heard that the Danish experimentalists Efterklang end off the group's history just after we heard them for the first time in the end of 2013. Fortunately, Rasmus, Mads and Casper palled up with the Finnish percussionist Tatu Rönkkö and now work on something different - very different as we saw from the first concert videos.
