Verdi, captivated by the story of the first Doge of Genoa Simon Boccanegra (XIV century) took the initiative to write the scenario after Antonio Gutiérrez’ drama and sent it to the librettist Francesco Maria Piave.

The plot unveils the tragic figure of Simon Boccanegra at a backdrop of political instability. He is tormented by memories of his love for the deceased daughter of his biggest enemy Fiesco. And while on the way to stop the cruel wars in Italy, a secret plot puts an end to his life. In his last moments Simon reconciles with Fiesco, sees himself through the clear eyes of his long lost daughter and, having just discovered happiness, passes away. Gradually unfolding the leitmotif of the memory, Verdi has created beautiful music, illuminated by star performances like Tito Gobbi as Boccanegra, Boris Hristov as Fiesco and others. The audience at IMF Varna Summer 2019 will have the opportunity to hear what is likely the best Simon Boccanegra performance in the world by the Bulgarian baritone Kiril Manolov who has toured all big theatres in Europe in this role. They will also enjoy the performances of Daria Masiero and Ivan Momirov.
