Stephen King's The Shining ends with the hotel in flames, and not in ice and whirlwinds like the Kubrick version. The writer explains that it is because he himself is warm and sentimental, while the director of his hateful film adaptation is "the coldest man in the universe."

King came in as a producer - he may have been attracted by the heat that warms this story. Ewan McGregor is the grown-up Danny, who mostly dreams of forgetting how skillfully his father is swinging an ax while trying to kill him. These family memories and the glow (his supernatural abilities) Danny tries to dive deep into, mostly into alcohol, but when the brilliant teenage girl, Abra, gets in touch with him, he decides to help. A dark sect has emerged that feeds on the souls of children with the same super-skills, and in the game of cat and mouse, seductive villain Rose flicks his hungry paws closer and closer to Abra. The thread brings the characters back to the hotel, where Room 217 is still waiting to be opened, and the twins are still looking for someone to play with - director Mike Flanagan, the horror master, recreates footage of Kubrick's film just like in a mirror. It's all two-and-a-half hours, only occasionally ripped by screams - meaning you don't expect the glow to burn all the time.
